Plastic in Fashion: In 2018, Nike made 24 BILLION pairs of shoes. That’s about 10 pairs of shoes per person on this entire planet. And that was just last year alone. Why should we even care? Because each shoe is mostly or completely made of plastic that is glued together in such a way that it is rendered non-recyclable. So for every pair of old sneakers you throw out, 100% of them go into landfill or into waterways. In the 80s, using plastic in shoes was revolutionary. They softened the landing of jumps for basketballers whilst being lighter than any other material. And it was the strongest material with little stretch. Designers got excited. And the plastic fashion revolution was on its way. Since then, plastic innovation in fashion has ramped up and has led to an enormous amount being used for clothes, accessories and shoes. BUT there is an opportunity here. Innovation in fashion means that it has the ability to change things in a big way. Companies like @sevillasmith make shoes from only natural materials. @adidasau is using recycled ocean plastics. Even @nike is replacing plastic with knitted material. It’s important to question the products and brands you are buying because the biggest solution is always: buy less, consume less and reduce your waste.
